Acupuncture treatment involves fine needles being inserted through the skin and briefly left in position. the number of needles varies but may be only two or three. The practitioner will assess each patient’s case and treatment will be tailored to the individual; so it is impossible to give more than this general idea of what your particular treatment might involve. Treatment might be once a week to begin with, then at longer intervals as the condition responds. A typical course of treatment lasts 5 to 8 sessions.

Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. We know that it increases the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin - in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received.

Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago and is part of an integrated system of healthcare known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). When illness or pain occurs TCM theory states that it is because the vital energy or Qi of the body has become blocked or is depleted. Acupuncture works by inserting very fine needles at specifically selected acupuncture points along energy channels or meridians to restore the energy balance of the body.

The GentleBirth program prepares you and your birth partner for a positive, gentle birth. The workshop is for parents who want to be actively involved in decision making and prefer to have an understanding of what choices are available to them for labour and birth in Ireland. The workshop  provides knowledge on the processes of labor and birth and helps you understand the many options/interventions that may arise.  The information provided is based on the latest scientific research and recommended international best practices to ensure you can navigate your options with confidence.

Hi , I'm Emma an Acupuncturist specialising in pregnancy & birth and a Positive Birth Coach.

While I have 2 different strands to my business the overall aim of both is the same ... to empower women to have a healthy, balanced pregnancy and a positive birth.

As a Positive Birth Coach I teach expectant couples brain training techniques including hypnobirthing & mindfulness so they will feel calm, confident and in control during labour.

I review the evidence around all the choices for your birth plan, walk you through how to decide what the right choices are for you and teach you how to advocate for yourself in labour. I teach birth partners lots of different pain relief techniques so they can be a strong support during labour. I also teach couples how to maximise their chances of the birth partner staying with the labouring mum for the entire labour, and how best to minimise interventions as much as possible.

I completed my training with the GentleBirth Institute which is extremely research and evidence based. My previous career was as a scientist so evidence and research is very important to me!

It was actually my life as a scientist that led me to my new path. During that period of my life I suffered from chronic health conditions including IBS, Endometriosis and Fibroids and it was because of that I started going to an acupuncturist for help. I discovered that acupuncture not only helped the physical issues but also with my mental health. It was so transformative that I decided to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner myself and opened Be Well Acupuncture Clinic!

Shortly after I opened my clinic I discovered I was pregnant and it was then I realised that so many women suffer with pregnancy related problems that western medicine wasn’t helping them with, but that Traditional Chinese Medicine could help with! Not just with sickness, pain, etc but also help preparing them to have a spontaneous and efficient labour, and provide pain relief during labour by using acupressure.

Acupuncture helped me through lots of issues during my own pregnancy, including morning sickness, back and shoulder pain, & anxiety. And of course, my husband used acupressure during my labour and it really worked!! So much so that the midwife didn’t believe I was in labour when I arrived at the hospital ... even though it turned out I was 7cm dilated!!

However all did not go according to plan during my first birth and despite the positive start I ended up with a ventouse delivery and 3rd degree tearing.

So when I had my 2nd pregnancy I knew that I wanted to do something even more that would help me have the positive birth I desired.

So myself and my husband did the GentleBirth workshop and we loved it! Mostly I think because it was very science/evidence based and we are both science nerds!! It made such a difference to my second pregnancy and birth. I still used my acupressure but I also used hypnobirthing to keep me calm, I was upright and mobile and we knew what our choices were and my husband knew how to advocate for me. I gave birth to my second gorgeous boy on all fours and in the words of my obstetrician “like a birth warrior”. It was the most amazing and powerful experience and so much easier than my previous birth.

I decided that I wanted every woman to know this. To know that she has the power and the strength and the wisdom to have a positive birth. I trained as a GentleBirth Instructor and I now run classes for expectant couples so that you can have that same amazing positive birth experience that I had … regardless of the type of birth you have.

Over the last 18 months with lockdowns and restrictions etc. I have realised that attending a live 8hr workshop, either online or in person, is not always something that is achievable.

So I am now offering on demand Online Birth Preparation Courses. These courses offer the same high quality content as the GentleBirth 8hr Workshops to prepare couples for a positive birth. But they are available as shorter on demand courses so that women can access them at a time that suits them. And of course, I bring all the tools from my acupuncture training to give you even more resources to draw on to make sure you have the most empowered birth possible!

I am really excited to be offering more options for women in pregnancy to access high quality birth information and tools for a positive birth all from the comfort of their own home!!
